Micro-Adventures

Alastair Humphreys was named National Geographic Adventurer of the Year for developing the idea of MicroAdventures.

In his own words....

"Adventure is a loose word, a spirit of trying something new, trying something difficult. Going somewhere different, leaving your comfort zone. Above all, adventure is about enthusiasm, ambition, open-mindedness and curiosity.

Adventure is all around us, at all times. Even during hard financial times such as these. Times when getting out into the wild is more enjoyable, invigorating and important than ever.

Microadventures are adventures that are close to home, cheap, simple, short, and yet very effective. A microadventure has the spirit (and therefore the benefits) of a big adventure. It’s just all condensed into a weekend away, or even a midweek escape from the office. Even people living in big cities are not very far away from small pockets of wilderness.

You can experience it by yourself or with friends. You can do it with your parents or children or colleagues from the office. You can seek out short, interesting, rewarding adventures right on your doorstep."

We can get overwhelmed with the thought of planning some grand, monumental journey, which leads of to keep pushing it off, but really something as seemingly insignificant as pitching a tent in the woods nearby, can be so rejuvenating. His website www.alastairhumphreys.com, is full of great ideas to inspire us to get going!
